Editing a product or variant

After you import products and variants to the system, you can add, edit or delete some of them. You also can create relations between catalog entries by adding them to multiple categories, or by associating items with each other for cross-selling purposes.

Properties for productCommerce: various forms of merchandise that you can display and purchase from the public site, including products, variations/SKUs, bundles, packages and dynamic packages.s and variantCommerce: a variant or SKU corresponds to a specific type of product with specific characteristics. For example, a product line of shirts have individual variations/SKUs that include size, color, and collar size.s are almost the same except that pricing and inventory options are defined for variants (SKUStock Keeping Unit; corresponds to a purchasable product with specific characteristics. For example, a product line of shirts has individual variations/SKUs for sleeve size, color, and collar size.s), which is why you see a tab displaying variants (SKUs) related to the product. Categories also have some of the properties described here.

Changes to existing relationCommerce: a link that makes a product appear in more than one product category (node).s and pricing are immediately published and visible on the website, and is not included in the publishing flow for the rest of the content. Changes to content and assetContent such as documents, videos, and images that can be linked to other content such as pages, blocks, and catalog entries in Commerce.s must be actively published to become visible on the website. See Publishing and managing versions for information about the publishing process.

Administrators and developers can define meta fields for enriching product information such as fabrics for clothing, or genre for media. You can add dictionary type values such as silk or satin from Settings in the global menuA group of options that appears in the uppermost part of the user interface when logged in. The global menu displays products and systems integrated with your website. It also displays links to the user guide and user settings, and to a global search. Header

The header area provides an overview of associated information. Much of this is created automatically and will rarely need to be changed, unless you are manually creating catalog entries. A clickable structure path shows product hierarchy information. The following list describes the header.

  • Display name. Title for the product or variant on the content display page.
  • Name. Name displayed in catalog listings and used when you work with the item in edit view.
  • Name in URLURLUniform Resource Locator. Also known as a web address such as http://world.episerver.com. automatically created based on name and place in the navigation; depends on the implementation whether it is visible in links on the site. Click Change to modify it.
  • SEO URL. Automatically created based on the Name; depends on the implementation whether it is visible in links on the site. Click Change to modify it.
  • Code. The product code/identification key, often provided by an external system. Click Change to modify it.
  • Markets. By default a product or variant is available in all markets when created. Click Change to modify the market availability.
  • Visible to. By default, catalogCommerce: a top-level container for catalog entries such as categories, products, and variants (SKUs). content is publicly visible and editable for users within the CommerceAdmins group.
  • Languages. The content is available in the displayed languages. The active language is not underlined.
  • ID, Type. Shows the ID set by the system and the type of content upon which the product or variant is based.
  • Product. The related product is displayed for a variant.

Content tab

The properties on the content tab depend on the type of product or variant displayed. For example, a book type of product or variant can have media type and author fields as shown in the following image.

Belongs To tab

Displays categories, products, packageCommerce: a unit that contains multiple products or variants, with a single unique pricing for the entire package; comparable to an individual SKU because the package item must be purchased as a whole (such as a computer system).s and bundleCommerce: a collection of variations and SKUs that let customers purchase two or more items at once.s to which a product or a variant belongs. For example, a variant may belong to the product of which it is a variant, and have a home categoryCMS: A built-in Episerver property. You apply a category to content, but you need to build the functionality to display the filtered results. Commerce: A grouping of purchasable products. (Same as node.) in the catalog. Also, it may be part of a Weekly specials campaign category, and a Spring package sales offering, as the following image shows.

Click Edit categories to create category relations either by dragging categories from Entries in the Assets pane, or through the Add Category button. To remove a category relation, click Detach for the category in the item list. When done, click Back in the upper notification bar to return to the catalog entry.

The top category is always the home location of products, meaning that the product is located here and linked to other categories. When you edit a product, the selection in the catalog tree displays the home category. If URLs based on the Name in URL property are used, the URL is automatically based on the path from the home category. This is important when you make another category the top location because the products are moved and their URLs change accordingly.

Pricing tab

Only visible for variants as products do not carry prices in the sample site, provides an overview of prices for the selected variant. You can set the Tax Category, associating a variant with different taxes depending on product type, such as luxury items or VAT for different regions.

  • You can select and define tax categories in the administration interface in Commerce Manager.
  • Click Edit prices to compare prices between products and markets while you edit them. See Managing prices for information about adding and editing prices for variants.

Inventory tab

Inventory information often comes from external systems, so you rarely need to change it, or it might be impossible to edit. On some sites, you can add information about quantities and shipping dimensions, but the information related to inventoryThe process of checking the availability in one or more warehouses for a specific product; or, a complete list of items such as property, goods in stock, or the contents of a building. locations is read-only.

You can edit the following properties for a variant:

  • Max. Quantity. Maximum number of items that can be purchased at one time.
  • Min. Quantity. Minimum number of items that can be purchased from the variant page.
  • Weight, Length, Height, Width. Used to calculate shipping cost, based on the shipping configuration.
  • Tracked. If selected, you cannot complete orders unless you provide inventory information from the Inventory Locations. If Tracked is not selected, you can place orders without providing inventory amounts.

Inventory locations also displays the following information.

  • Location. The physical stock location of the inventory, as defined in the warehouse settings.
  • Quantity. Total available quantity for a specific location.
  • Reserved. Define a quantity to reserve a specified number of inventory In Stock, and prevent them from being used. For example, if you set In Stock=10 and Reserved=5, then the In Stock count does not go below 5.
  • Allow backorder/preorder. If selected, backorders and preorders are allowed.
  • Backorder/preorder availability. When either Backorder or Preorder are selected and a quantity is specified, the count begins to decrease after the In stock count reaches its limit. For example, if you set In stock=10, Reserved=3, and Backorder=0, then the Backorder quantity starts to decrease after In Stock count reaches 3. So, if you place an order for 10 units, then the final count is In Stock=3, Reserved=3, and Backorder=7.
  • Inventory status. Set to Enabled, Disabled, or Ignored.
    • If Enabled, the number of units of a product being purchased cannot exceed the inventory value; the check out procedure cannot be completed if the number in the inventory is exceeded. Instead, the quantity you can purchase defaults to the actual number of remaining units.
    • If Disabled or Ignored, and Tracked is selected for a product variant, then the available quantity is monitored, but the number of units that you can check out is not limited. If you only have a quantity of 5 and you order 6 items, the checkout still completes and the inventory number becomes -1. The inventory status for a particular warehouse is generally considered more important than the tracking flag on the variant itself.

Assets tab

Link media files to a catalog entry. A media file can be one or more images, or one or more documents (PDF for example). Add media files of your choice by dragging items from Media in the assets pane into the assets area of the catalog entry. You also can click Add Media to add asset items.

Click Move Up or Move Downin the context menu to rearrange items in the list. On the sample site, the item tagged with the default group at the top of the list is the one used for the main display.

When you upload media items, you can sort them into groups, such as Banner.

Variants tab

Only visible for products, provides an overview of variants related to the product. Click Edit variants to add or remove variants for the product.

From the Edit Variants view, you can add variants for the product either by dragging them from Entries in the Assets pane, or clicking Add Variant. To remove a link to a variant, click Remove for the variant in the item list. When done, click Back in the upper notification bar to return the product you were working with.

Related Entries tab

Provides an overview of relations between the selected entry and other catalog entries. Use this to build functionality for promoting new, popular, or sale products by displaying them as featured products in category and search result pages.

You can display top selling products in your store, and create up-selling or cross-selling items like Product Accessories or You May Also Like type of displays.

Click Edit related entries to create entry relations either by dragging entries from Entries in the Assets pane, or clicking Add Entry. You also can Edit, Duplicate or Delete a related entry by selecting these options in the context menu for the item.

You can have different relation entry types available for selection when you are editing. These are implementation specific and cannot be changed from the related entries tab. If available, you can select an entry in the list and select the desired related entry type.

When you are done editing relations, click Back in the upper notification bar to return the catalog entry you were working with.

Settings tab

Settings is a default tab in Episerver containing a set of built-in date-related properties which you rarely need to change. See Editing content properties for information about the options.
